At 7:45, students who are participating onstage for the "Hola" song should come forward and retrieve their posters. Those students will sit silently onstage through the welcome and introductions, and then stand for the "Hola" song when instructed by Sra. McMahan. Kim will do introductions and welcome, and then all of the students sing the "Hola" song from their seats. They should stand. Make programs with the lineup and the words to the song on it for the students to read from on the back. Adams students are dancing cumbia. Angelo Cassar is attending with three students for flamenco guitar. Ruth is doing la cueca with Woodcrest students. Martha will be doing la bamba with St. Brigid. Zumba will be performed with student volunteers and Jeanenne Heye.

Kim,
-For PD tomorrow, please give us an update on who is performing so far.
-All teachers teach the Hola song.
- Get info from each of the entertainment groups that explain their number, who they are, etc.

Fiesta Hispana: Entertainment-Kim
*For the last part of the evening (stations closed, everyone congregates in the auditorium).
Stations close at 7:45 and entertainment starts at 8:00. Goes until 8:30 or 8:45. Will take place in Central Auditorium

  1. Contact and line up performers (see ideas below)--they stay seated in the first three rows so they can see the entertainment. Hispanic families will have seats in the rows behind the performers.
  2. Get in touch with Jeff Hayes, the Central Auditorium Coordinator 923-5571 about sound equipment, music equipment, projector, etc.
  3. Come up with a program order, and logistics on organization of kids.

-location of bathrooms where they can change if they need to / and where they can store their
stuff before hand (in the first three rows at their seats).
-get parent / high school student help
-instead of using back stage, we'll have all students in the auditorium and they'll come up when
it's their turn to perform. You'll need to have a plan for where you want them to sit, when to
come up, etc.
4. Communicate all the logisitics ahead of time to volunteers helping you, performers, Jeff Hayes, and us teachers.
5. MC the program, including thank yous to Hispanics, volunteers (parents and students), students, parents, committee coordinators
6. Keep track of those who volunteer so you can write thank yous. Suggestion; have a sheet of paper that they sign in on with their addresses

Entertainment Ideas:
  1. Ruth Burlew from Chile. For the last two fiestas has taught two Chilean dances, “La Cueca” and “La Rumba Flamenco” Her phone number 839-9798 (no email)

2 Two moms from Colombia have performed "La Cumbia"-Yolima Barbosa/Edgar Martinez (have students at Adams) and Luz Guerra (used to have children at Woodcres)t. Luz did perform La Cumbia with Carlos Uribe (Woodcrest parent) the first year of the fiesta at Woodcrest. They did a great job
Luz’s number: 837-5524, luzguerra2001@yahoo.com
Yolima’s number (husband is Edgar Martinez) 837-2934 yolimab@charter.net
Carlos Uribe 631-0297 ceuribe@hotmail.com
.
3. Martha teach a dance to students (La Bamba-St. Brigid)? Martha herself perform (with husband)?

4. Flamenco guitar player. Angelo Cassar. Angelo.cassar@att.net
631-7128, 1412 North Parkway Dr., Midland

5.. Have all the 5th graders sing a song (At the beginning?)
*They would all learn this ahead of time in their 5th grade Spanish class ("Hola").

Manny

Fiesta 2011
1) For the actual entertainment this year, we had Angelo Cassar and his students play while people entered (some in the audience found it distracting, and were irritated that people weren't quiet. It was simply meant to be background music--maybe that could be explained in the program next time
2) All students sang "Hola" by Gaby Rivera. Students were seated, and should stand next time.
3) Recognition was given to all of the Hispanic volunteers/presenters, and they stood and were recognized individually. Other groups were recognized as a group (including parent/student volunteers, etc.).
4) Angelo Cassar performed (see contact information above).
5) Ruth Burlew taught Woodcrest students to dance la Cueca.
6) Manny and his wife danced salsa (note to be sure CD's operate, especially if burned).
7) Martha Avina and her students danced la Bamba.
8) We chose students during the first dance session to perform a merengue doing Zumba with Carla Budinsky. Jeanenne Heye was supposed to help, also, but had a family emergency. Keep her in mind for next year.
9) Adams students danced la Cumbia under the direction of Kim McMahan, Yolima Barbosa and Edgar Martinez. They used the skirts purchased by the district.
10) Manny and I introduced each Spanish teacher and their schools, and we all came onstage and danced with maracas to "Vamos Pa' la Conga" by Ricardo Montaner. It was a big highlight for the kids. We did a conga line and wove down into the crowd. Very effective. Do this again for sure.
*Suggestions:
1) Next year, be SURE to have the first rows roped off and marked "reserved for dancers/entertainers/Hispanics." Many people sat in those rows and the performers did not have a place to sit.
2) As Manny said above, special recognition to the high school volunteers who were former students of ours. It would be neat to have them introduce themselves and tell what elementary school they attended. It gives the kids a goal to look forward to.
3) Print in the program (or rework) that the music played by the guitarists at the beginning is solely for background entertainment. **

UPDATES 2012: Kim contacted Jeff Hayes and spoke with him about the issue with cords onstage last year and asked for wireless microphones. Jeff said those are with the high school and in use, so he will set up one microphone off to the side for my use as the MC, out of the way of the dancers. He suggested NO BURNED CDS for the entertainment so they work. Please have your disc ready to go and to Kim McMahan by 6:00 the night of the fiesta so she can put them in order for the person manning the sound system. A simple CD player will be used during the zumba portion of the evening.

Tentative order of entertainment:
1) Introductions, rationale, thank yous (Hispanic volunteers by name including years of service, parent volunteers, Central, student volunteers and where they came from, students, parents and committee coordinators).
2) "Hola" song, with students standing at their seats and chosen students for each country onstage with posters. Kim gives rationale of importance of global cititenship in the 21st Century (link to district meeting-recognize all cultures and languages as important and thankful for our part in teaching one of those languages in order to create global citizens).
3) Zumba demonstration (Jeanenne Heye and student volunteers).
4) La Bamba - St. Brigid and Martha Avina.
5) Angelo Cassar and student guitarists.
6) La Cueca - Woodcrest students under direction of Ruth Burlew.
7) La Cumbia - Adams students under direction of Yolima Barbosa and Edgar Martinez.
8) Thank you and goodnight and finally...
9) Introduction onstage of Spanish teachers in attendance with final song/dance weaving into the audience.

KIM NEEDS TO BRING: Camera, CD player, Hola song, posters for song, Cumbia music, skirts, flowers for hair, maracas, sign in sheet for volunteers, programs and reserved signs.
